The term high-functioning autism isn’t technically a clinical term. It is a term we use to refer to those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and can function with the necessary life skills. Autism is a disorder that affects brain development. There are many symptoms and diverse ranges of severity that accompany autism. Those with autism who are thought to be high-functioning can typically live independently.
