You may feel worried when things don’t turn out the way that you hoped that they would. It’s not always easy to accept that life is imperfect and sometimes disappointing. But we know that God’s way is perfect and all His promises in the Bible are true.
When you are worried, God’s unchanging character can be a shield of refuge for you. Because his word is flawless, you can trust Him to protect you against thoughts that cause you to worry. He will help you choose new ways of thinking so you can throw your worry to the side.
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. – Psalm 28:7, NIV
You can have lasting joy no matter your circumstances when you trust that God is greater than anything that causes you to worry. God wants you to trust Him more every day, so you can choose joy over worrying.
When worry arises in you, you can simply say, “My heart trusts in God.” This simple declaration will help you remember that God is trustworthy in situations that stir your anxiety. He helps you by serving as your strength and shield of protection in the battles you face.
Many people who struggle with worry tend to fret and fear, and they don’t feel calm inside. But this scripture can help you meditate on the truth that God is in full control of everything that causes you to worry. Fear often causes us to become worried. We may have real or imagined fears about things like our jobs, our health, our finances, our relatives, our country, or any number of other things that are largely out of our control. Your body will tell you when you are feeling afraid. You may experience sweaty palms, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, feelings of irritation or anger, or other symptoms like you can’t sit still.
These signals can alert you that you need to turn to God right away. You can simply pray this verse or say it aloud, affirming that you are trusting God over your fears. The more often you do this, the greater sense of peace that you will have.
Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.” – Isaiah 44:8, NIV
Do you ever tremble in fear over your circumstances? When you are worried God wants to be your rock where you run for protection and strength. He wants you to turn to him before you turn to anything else including good things like your friends or family.
If you turn to other things like food, entertainment, social media, or any other temptation when you are afraid, you can use this verse to steer you back toward God. He is the only one big enough to handle everything that is worrying you, so try turning to him first as your rock.
Jesus never said that we would not have anything to worry about. Instead, he tells us what to do with our worries instead of pretending that we can eliminate them. He wants us to only concern ourselves with one day at a time, trusting that he will provide for all our needs.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:33-34, NIV
If we commit to seeking God first, our worries will hold less power over us. We will learn to trust God with greater faith, and we won’t be as tempted to fret over the little things and the big things.
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” – Matthew 26:39, NIV
Jesus knows what it’s like to feel worried and afraid. Before he died for our sins, he pleaded with his father to remove the suffering from him if it was possible. In this moment of intense pressure, Jesus decided that even if God the father would not take the cup of suffering away from him, he would fully trust him with the outcomes.
You can also ask God to take away the things that worry you, but ultimately surrender your will to the Father, knowing that he has the best in mind for you just as he did for Jesus.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28, NIV
Many people turn to this verse when they are worried. It’s good to think about the fact that God can use everything that happens to us for our ultimate good if we are following him as true believers. God will even work bad things for your good if you trust him and submit to his will for your life. You can trust him even in the things that you worry about because he will use them for your ultimate betterment.
The things that cause us to worry can work well as calls to prayer. When you notice a worry popping up in your mind, consider that a prayer prompt instead of something on which you will ruminate.Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7, NIV
Ask God for what you want, then be sure to thank him for everything that he’s done for you in the past. By combining your request with gratitude, you will receive transcendent peace from the Holy Spirit which will act as a guard over your heart and mind against the things that cause you to worry.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. – Philippians 4:8, NIV
Once you have surrendered your worries to God in prayer and thanked him for everything he does for you, you can focus on what is good to reroute your thoughts. Make a list of all of these blessing categories in your life so that you’ll have a ready-made list when you need to focus on what is good. God puts no limits on how much you can think of these positive things that he’s given you instead of working yourself up to a storm of worry.

If you’re not sure how to pray about your worries, you can always pretend that you are throwing them on Jesus. He is big enough and strong enough to handle any worry, fear, or anxiety that you cast on him. You can trust him to take these things away from you because he loves you so very much. The more you lean into God’s love for you, the more your worries will lessen.
